An upright vacuum cleaner with a motor-driven brush and beater remains the recommended tool for virtually all types of carpet cleaning. Though not preferable as a primary cleaning tool, a tank-type cleaner is often sufficient for touch-up work, especially when used with a vacuum wand or in conjunction with a motor-driven brush-and-beater vacuum. A hand-pushed or mechanical pile brush is ideal for cleaning high-traffic areas like corridors; it opens and erects the pile, reducing the carpet surface's tendency to compact. Pile brushing should always be done against the nap of the pile.
